Purchasing Network Equipment
What should I get?
Starting or adding to a network can be a daunting prospect. There are literally hundreds of different makes and devices all doing similar thing with weird names like router, switch, hub, bridge and firewall. What goes where? What are the rules? Will a switch from brand A work with a router from brand B?
Is cost a real indicator of quality? Do I need to buy something expensive or could I use the cheaper kit? Do I need a gigabit or 100 meg network? What is fibre cable for?

Remember when it comes to IT there are always twenty ways of doing anything. The trick is to find the best most cost effective way of achieving what you want. This may not be the cheapest or the most expensive way. There is however one rule of thumb.. It costs a lot more to change a badly designed system than to implement the right system first time. Planning is the key, it costs nothing to change the plan before you have bought the kit.
